starlight

starlight
s.d.hilderbrand
january 2008
(moderate)
drop D tuning

the 5th chords in the verses are hammered on rhymically in a way that's
hard to convey in tablature...

Verse:
D5/G E5/A G5/C
starlight streams in
through the window
D5/G E5/A G5/C
on a cold winter night

D5/G E5/A
and we lose track
G5/C
of where we've been
D5/G E5/A G5/C
and then we lose sight

Chorus:
E5 D5
and all those words we've said
C5 D5
fall through our heads
E5 D5
and all those words we've said
C5 E5 F5 F#5
fall right through our heads

Verse:
D5/G E5/A G5/C
starlight streams in
through the window
D5/G E5/A G5/C
on a cold winter night

D5/G E5/A
and we lose track
G5/C
of where we've going
D5/G E5/A G5/C
and then we start to fight

Chorus

Fiddle around and then outro.

Written in a lonely fit one evening when it seemed most hope was lost -- my insomnia and relationship clashed hard-core. Their feud still hasn't been resolved.

Like many of the lyrics to my little ditties, I came up with this in the shower in the morning before hopping the bus to campus. While on the bus, I wrote down what I'd been singing and scribbled down a second verse. Not yet perfect, but it works for me!

In a little town called Gal-i-lee
Am7 D
there lived a man like you and me
Am7
He drank himself to sleep at night
D
couldn't get one thing right

Am7 Dsus4 D Dsus2 D
Sat staring at the sea

F C
dreamed of somewhere over the hor-i-zon
F C
where he watched the sun a-risin'

Fm Dm
Gonna have his own ship one day
G7 C
Then he's gonna sail away

In a larger town called Cardiff
there lived a man who worked on skiffs
He worked himself to death all day
couldn't ever get away

Never even set adrift

dreamed of somewhere over the horizon
where he watched the sun a-risin'
Gonna have his own ship one day
Then he's gonna sail away

In a larger town called Baltimore
there lived a girl who was raised poor
She sold herself to bed at night
slept under a bright red light

always wanting something more

dreamed of somewhere over the horizon
where she watched the sun a-risin'
Gonna have her own ship one day
Then she's gonna sail away

old enough

old enough
s.d. hilderbrand
august 2006
(folk)

play it like donovan would...

(chords to come)

soon i will be old enough,
then i will be old.
soon i will be old enough,
then i will be mold.

when the kids are listening
to me in the morning,
when the kids are listening
to me in the evening,

then i will be old enough,
then i will be told.
then i will be old enough,
then i will be gold.

when the kids are old enough,
when the kids are told.
when the kids are old enough,
when the kids are gold.

soon they will be old enough,
then they will be old.
soon they will be old enough,
then i will be mold.

la la la la la la-la,
la la-la la la,
la la la la la la-la,
la la-la la la!

[fade out with laughter and the final guitar chord ringing]

init()

so, i've decided to create a space to keep some of my new songs and other sonic creations. it beats maintaining all the back-end code myself. i simply don't have the time...

music has been a great release for me, especially playing drums in the garage after a long day (sorry, neighbors!). it has also been extremely frustrating, especially when i see someone else play so well... oh well... it's not like i ever wanted to be a rock star anyway (which i think makes me a freak)... this frustration explains the "fists" above...

so stay tuned, in tune, iTunes, or something like that. reach me and teach me if'n you want to use any of this material or suggest improvements...
